They looked like radioactive versions of pond koi, ranging from about two to four feet long. And where I was, it was just me and and wind and the sound of their slither, evoking the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Creature_Features\">Creature Features<\/a> that mesmerized me when I was a kid.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1796\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1796\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thefreequark.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/common-carp-2-2.jpg\" alt=\"Common Carp \" title=\"common carp 2 (2)\" width=\"500\" height=\"372\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1796\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1796\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Common Carp - \u00a9ingridtaylar<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But . . . they&#8217;re just carp. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Common_carp\">Common Carp<\/a>, or sometimes, European Carp, or for the more pragmatic <i>Cyprinus carpio<\/i>. The &#8220;European&#8221; is probably a tip-off that they&#8217;re non-native, introduced in the late 19th century and prized at the time as a food fish. They&#8217;re often considered a nuisance for their habit of stirring up sediments during feeding, disturbing the area for other species. Of course, they can&#8217;t help it. It&#8217;s what they do.<\/p>\n<p>From a visual perspective, though, they are spectacular. The late afternoon sun created this gold sheen on their scales. Unfortunately, they were so immersed in the mud, they didn&#8217;t cooperate for a mugshot.
