They bring me to interesting things.<\/p>\n<p>On this Berkeley day, something seemed out of place &#8212; that nagging oddity in my periphery. I turned and looked closer in the mud. After a few minutes, the frog peered out of its bath of mud. It was an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.californiaherps.com\/frogs\/pages\/r.catesbeiana.html\">American Bullfrog<\/a> with its citrine eyes and green mug:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1428\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/taylar\/3719479744\/in\/photostream\/\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1428\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1428\" title=\"Mud\" src=\"https:\/\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2618\/3719479744_46be866c13.jpg\" alt=\"Hidden Frog\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1428\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hidden Frog &#8211; \u00a9ingridtaylar<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I posted the above image on Flickr and referred to the bullfrog as a &#8220;he,&#8221;\u00a0offering the following distinction:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>On female bullfrogs the tympanum (eardrum) is the same size or smaller than the eye socket. Male bullfrog tympanums are much larger filling most of the distance to their eyes.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So, this beautiful &#8220;she&#8221; watched me for a while. When I&#8217;d move my lens, her eyes followed. I set my camera down and just enjoyed the simplicity of the moment.<\/p>\n<p>A few bullfrog factoids:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They can jump up to six feet, sometimes exercising this prerogative in the quest of prey<\/li>\n<li>They hibernate until late spring or early summer &#8212; in the mud<\/li>\n<li>They&#8217;re an introduced species on the west coast, brought here as a food source in the late 19th century after market hunters decimated other frog species<\/li>\n<li>They&#8217;re nocturnal and aquatic &#8212; and they can breathe under water by absorbing oxygen through their skin<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>My head was, literally, framed by nectar plants, so honeybees and bumblebees scraped my cheek and hair.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1430\" style=\"width: 510px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1430\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1430\" title=\"Clarkia Bee\" src=\"https:\/\/www.thefreequark.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/07\/clarkiabee.jpg\" alt=\"Pink Clarkia (I Think) With Honeybee\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-1430\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pink Clarkia (pink Clarkia (<i>Clarkia arcuata<\/i> I Think) With Honeybee &#8211;
