Animalia is precisely what it's meant to be: a collection of non-flighted animals, mammals, reptiles, and fish -- inhabiting the terrestrial and marine environments under the wings of
Bird Nation.
Birds are ever-present and visible in our existence, whereas the terrestrial wild ones often lurk in stealth under the mud, camouflaged by willows and pines, or submerged in the ocean and then visible for just a split second of our time.
My connections with all wild animals are fleeting, wary as animals are and should be of our presence. When I'm privileged to come upon a wild animal -- in one silent connection with a river otter or a bullfrog or a fox kit -- I cherish the moment, knowing it will pass away long before I can accept that it's gone.
