The inspiration for the Bird Noir collection derives from the dimness and mist that shrouds the Pacific Northwest in its seasons. Moving back to Seattle from Northern California, I lost my perpetual light ... but gained the atmosphere of a foggy scrim.

These birds, photographed primarily in urban contexts, are cinematic and moody by virtue of these weathered elements. The monochromatic treatments and settings speak to the darkness that breeds photographic inspiration in a Seattle winter.

Bird Noir is a collection of urban birds, and birds against the backdrop of overcast skies. It's the diffused and stark light of winter and wintery days -- and the grit of urban settings -- that constitute the theme in this gallery.
